The Leroy Martial Arts Center offers adult and children's classes that specialize in martial arts instruction based upon the Tatsu Do system. Classes range from basic karate, including all types of self-defense, Aiki Jutsu, Ju Jutsu, and Kobudo, traditional oriental weapons, including traditional Japanese sword. Safety is a component of our training and is always enforced. The benefits of learning karate are many, and participants of any age can benefit from:

Beginners in Tatsu Do will learn striking hand techniques, kicks and blocks and will practice self-defense and free style sparring. Students are also introduced to the use of oriental weapons, bo and sai. Children would not typically handle oriental weapons unless at the discretion of the instructor and parents. For advanced students, training incorporates Ju Jutsu and Aiki Jutsu techniques. All students will learn to:

  • Exercise, warm up and stretch
  • Master all basic kicks, strikes, punches, blocks and stances
  • Defend against attacks and weapons
  • Throw, lock up, and disable an attacker
  • Increase self confidence

Anyone can learn Karate – men, women, and children. No special talent, age, or physical strength are required, only discipline and willingness to work hard. Class Descriptions

Martial Arts Center offers a range of classes to meet the fitness abilities and goals of your entire family. Each class consists of aerobic warm-up exercises, stretching, body conditioning and karate instruction.

Children's Karate  
Children's classes begin with our Little Dragons Class designed for children ages 4-6, and continue with our Children's Classes for ages 7-12 and Teenagers 13-17.

Children - Karate Ranking
  • Focus and concentration - the 1st area we work on with any child is the ability to focus. Focus and concentration improves the ability to listen and to learn. We start by teaching the 3 rules of concentration: “focus your eyes, focus your mind, and focus your body”.
  • Respect - students learn to receive respect by giving respect and treating others the way they want to be treated. Respect for parents and teachers is emphasized most of all.
  • Self Control - we teach students to develop control over their bodies through exercises in class. Once they learn to control their body, the mind follows. When they get angry and want to react, the self control lessons they have learned will stop them.
  • Self Discipline  - we instill in children the attitude of knowing what they are responsible for doing, and doing it without being told.  Like cleaning their room, completing homework, and practicing their martial arts, it's just like a muscle - the more it's used the stronger it gets.
  • Prevent Bullying – a concern for many parents. We teach children how to give the right signals and the correct body language to express themselves in a confident way, as well as lots of physical and mental tactics.

Adult Karate  

Karate is not just for kids! Many Adults (18+) have discovered karate as a way to lose weight, improve their health, and change their lives.

Adult Karate
  • Self Confidence - Martial Arts is an excellent way to improve your self-confidence. Our classes help students do this in two crucial ways; as students progress through the belt ranks their belief in their ability and confidence grows. In addition, by learning to defend yourself you will feel more secure which greatly improves self-confidence.
  • Fitness - Martial Arts is a great way to improve your strength and overall fitness. Martial Arts works every muscle in your body. Punching is great for your arms, back, and shoulders. Kicking is great for toning and strengthening both the back and front of your legs, and your butt too!
  • Weight Loss - Martial Arts can burn up to 800 calories per hour! That is nearly double the calories burned performing most other types of exercise. This is why many people choose martial arts to lose weight.
  • Mental health and stress reduction – the physical activity of punching and kicking aids in stress reduction. The focus and concentration techniques help to push the daily challenges of life aside. Last but not least, our classes are a place where you can build friendships and share common experiences.

Self Defense  
The core of our martial arts curriculum, our self defense courses not only teach you a full range physical techniques for self defense, we also teach the psychology of self defense – increasing your awareness, spotting potentially dangerous situations before they occur, and de-escalating a situation before it becomes physical. Private Lessons  

Private lessons of 30, 60 or 90 minutes are also available to students of all ages, and can be tailored to your fitness goals and individual needs.
